Your Family Story - Attachment Focussed Arts

The aim of the family coming together to think about a story is to assist parents and children in mending things in the loveliest and most rewarding way possible. We are providing a safe and nurturing space where we can help caregivers to become curious about their children, and their relationship with them all in the creative collaboration of story making and using the arts.

Through the use of the Tavistock Model of Infant Observation, our task is to enable the relationship between you and your child to develop a healthier course, by enhancing your own capacity for careful observation of interactions, between you and your child.

During the story making morning, our aim is to foster your capacity for getting to know your own emotional experiences surrounding your child and the crucial task of being an emotionally present parent for your child. Both caregiver and child will be able to get to know more about what each other feels and thinks, this will enable both to develop more of a reflective capacity

This is a unique opportunity for parents to invest valuable, creative time with their child and then for parents to process the experience with an experienced professional in the following week.

Who's it for?

This story making experience would benefit all families. But, particularly those who may be interested in therapy but are not quite sure what it's all about. It would suit caregivers and children who feel that their relationship has somehow gone awry, and who may want an opportunity to explore their relationship through the arts in a professional, confidential and supportive space. It compliments the work of an existing therapeutic process or is suitable for those who are curious about the opportunities for growth offered by therapy and wish to learn more.

Why The Arts, Attachment and Story making?

At Therapy Space, we feel passionately about mending things in a creative way. We have seen time and time again the effectiveness, the joy, the bonding, the inspiration and real enjoyment that 'making things','making images' and ‘making stories’ together brings. We know that some thoughtful interventions and reflection time with parents can be enough to really help family life.

What’s the Plan?

Parent Consultation (Before workshop begins, at a time to be agreed)

Saturday Morning 9:30 - 12:30
The morning starts off with an introduction to the process of story making. Some time is allocated for the family to think out all their ideas for characters, setting and ‘what happens’. Then we use the art materials (clay, paints and drawing materials) to create the images. This is a chance for the family to think together about their story and explore the use of the materials and techniques. With the use of clay you begin to form the story, combined by painting landscapes onto a big sheet of paper.

A short break for snacks and drinks.

11:30 - 12:30

The family present their images in a cohesive order and talk about their constructed ‘Family Story’.

Parent Consultation (After workshop is completed, at a time to be agreed)
